Alex Jones and Steph McGovern are on a mission to help families change the way they shop without changing their lifestyle.
Britain is a nation of shoppers, but our retail therapy habits come at a price. Whether it’s impulse buying, purchasing things that we don’t use or need or always going for the most expensive premium brands, most of us are guilty of shopping sins that are costing us more than they need to.
However help is at hand from the One Show’s Alex Jones and business journalist Steph McGovern, who, in this brand new series, are on a mission to help families change the way they shop without changing their lifestyle. From make-up to cleaning products, gadgets to shampoos, clothes to lawn mowers, Alex and Steph will be using their shopping and business expertise to try and change the habits of families and save them money.
Each week they will be confronting a family whose spending has become out of control. After spying on how they family shop they will be replacing their usual products with unlabelled ones, most are cheaper but some are more expensive, challenging the families loyalty to certain brands. At the end of the experiment the family will find out what they’ve been using and decide if they really can change the way they shop potentially saving them a fortune a year.
Also Steph and Alex investigate where some of our products come from and there are consumer tests to see how the cheaper brands stand up to the more expensive ones. Consumer expert Professor Avi Shankar reveals some of the tactics that marketing people use to make us buy more, helping us all to shop smarter.
