Fizz (part of Banijay UK) and Nice One TV have been commissioned to produce a second series of hit teatime entertainment show, Lightning, for BBC Two.
Following a successful run earlier this year, Lightning, which is hosted by award-winning comic Zoe Lyons, is to return for a further 30 episodes, with filming due to start in Belfast next month.
Lightning sees the traditional quiz show collide with gameshow, in a fast-paced and frantic format designed to leave contestants’ nerves in tatters. Six challengers battle it out across six adrenaline-pumping rounds while a ruthless spotlight patrols the studio eliminating contestants.
The challengers’ motivation is simple: do whatever it takes to stay out of the light.
With dramatic lightning and a thundering soundtrack, Lightning combines quick-fire questions with contestants aiming to reach the ultimate goal of £3,000 prize money.
Zoe Lyons said:
“I am absolutely delighted that Lightning does indeed strike twice. I can’t wait to meet the next lot of fearless contestants who have the courage and quick thinking to take on the infamous roaming light. It is great to be involved in this brilliant show that clearly was a hit with the viewers in the first series.”
Neale Simpson, Creative Director of Fizz, added:
“We’re thrilled to be back in Belfast making more Lightning for BBC Two with Chris and the brilliant team over in Northern Ireland. Here’s to an electric second series!”
Chris Jones, Founder of Nice One, said:
“So grateful BBC Daytime are keeping the faith in Lightning, and I couldn’t be happier about working with Fizz and Zoe again.”
Lightning is filmed in Northern Ireland with support from Northern Ireland Screen.
Series one performed well for younger viewers and was above the broadcaster’s slot for Adults 16-34 by +50%. Maintaining that success, it also outperformed BBC Two’s slot average for Adults 55-64.
Lightning is a 30 x 30’ series for BBC Two. The format was devised by Fizz (part of RDF) and Nice One. The Executive Producers are Neale Simpson (Fizz) and Chris Jones (Nice One). It was commissioned by Carla-Maria Lawson, BBC Head of Daytime and Early Peak, and Muslim Alim, Commissioning Editor BBC Daytime and Early-Peak.
