Channel 4 announces The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies

Channel 4 Commissioning Editor, Arts and Performance, Jan Younghusband, has commissioned a 3 x 60 min series from RDF Television, part of the RDF Media group, showcasing the world’s most remarkable classical music prodigies. The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies will be produced and directed by Rod Williams, and the Executive Producers will be Teresa Watkins and Grant Mansfield.

Sixteen-year-old Alexander Prior is one of Britain’s most talented and prolific young composers. He began composing at the age of eight and has already written more than forty works, including symphonies, concertos, two ballets, two operas and a Requiem Mass.

Now Alex brings together some of the world’s most remarkable young musical talent to perform a concerto. Travelling to three continents, Alex handpicks four musical prodigies, ranging in age from nine to 15.

Taking inspiration from these talents he writes a quadruple concerto and invites the children come to England for a week of intensive rehearsals, which climaxes in Alex conducting a concert at the Sage, Gateshead, with The Northern Sinfonia.

But before the performance, Alex must ensure these extraordinary young performers are able to work together and create a spectacular performance on the night, as it promises to be a defining moment in all of their careers.

Jan Younghusband said:

“Channel 4 consistently seeks out compelling arts programming, that brings music, arts, and performance to a mainstream audience in a unique way. This series will follow children with supreme musical talent; and both their astonishing ability, and the music they produce, are sure to make for truly inspirational viewing.”
